What are the benefits of a small slow cooker?
The 1.5 quart size slow cooker is great for a single person or perhaps even two people.
Another great reason to buy this size is if you have a vegetarian or two in the house and often cook both meat and vegetarian dishes. This makes it easy to do that. I know firsthand what it's like cooking for both meat eaters and vegetarians for meals so this is a great reason to have a compact slow cooker on hand.
Moreover, some people suggest that cooking small quantities in large slow cookers doesn't work so well. So if you find you routinely fill up a large slow cooker 1/3 full, you might want to buy a smaller unit for better results.

For example, many people use a pressure cooker when they are cooking a pot of green beans, potatoes, and pieces of ham. A slow cooker is used more for cooking one-pot meals, whole roasts, soups, and so much more.
Can you put raw chicken in a slow cooker?
It is up to you if you want to put raw chicken or other raw meat directly into your slow cooker. Some people prefer to brown their meat and poultry first but you do not have to as the slow cooker heats the meat all the way through and locks in moisture to keep it nice and moist.
Keep in mind, though, that chicken does release a lot of moisture during the cooking process so you may want to brown it first. It can also be decided by what your recipe suggests that you are using.

I'm kicking off the list with this unit because the customer feedback is amazing. With hundreds of excellent top ratings, yet priced really low, this is a fantastic slow cooker deal.
While it's basic in features, it looks good with a stainless steel exterior.
The inner 1.5 quart stoneware pot is removable and dishwasher safe (as is the tempered glass lid).
As you can see, this isn't some fancy digital machine. It operates with a dial. There are 3 settings which are "low", "high" and "warm".
Overall, customers (hundreds of them) love this machine.
However, the negative feedback largely pertains to temperature. The hot is too hot. The warm is too warm. Or the hot is not hot enough. This can definitely be an issue when there are only 3 settings. If you have specific temperature needs, you'll want a more fully featured slow cooker with more granular temperature controls.

With three settings, you get some cooking temperature flexibility. While most smaller slow cookers have three settings, some don't.
This model also includes a rubber sealed lid.
It also comes with a rubber cord to secure the lid for transporting finished dishes (this is an uncommon feature for smaller slow cookers, which probably contributes to its popularity).
It's white in an oval shape. The white fits well in most kitchen color schemes.
The interior crock pot and lid are dishwasher safe (I'd never buy one that wasn't).

Boy, do people like this slow cooker. While it doesn't have quite as many reviews as the Elite Gourmet above, it has well over 100 and the average rating is high.
This red slow cooker will stand out in any kitchen. If you think a splash of red will work for your kitchen, give this one careful consideration.
This is also a simple machine with three settings "keep warm", "low" and "hot". That's it for settings – no timer or more granular controls.
The removable stoneware pot and lid are both dishwasher friendly.
One additional feature this unit has a rubber seal to seal the lid. However, while this feature may enhance the machine for some people, a few people didn't like having to attach the rubber seal.
One other concern was that it's very small. That's the point though. It's a 1.5 quart slow cooker which is very small. They look a lot bigger in the picture. If this was a big pot, the 7 quart pots wouldn't fit on the counter.

If you don't like mucking around with settings, this is a good option for you.
This 1.5 quart white slow cooker by the maker for the first slow cooker, Crock Pot, is as basic as it gets with no settings.
Both the stone insert and lid are dishwasher safe.
Customer feedback: Overall, very positive with a lot of customer reviews. This is a popular "no-setting" slow cooker with good feedback.
Main positive feedback: Great for small dishes, super easy to clean and super small so it fits small kitchens.
Main negative feedback: Too small and only one setting. I think some people who gave it a bad review didn't realize this had only one setting, so be aware this model only has one setting. It's an easy feature to overlook (I suspect some people wonder why on earth any slow cooker would have only one setting.

The positive feedback simply praises the fact this machine warms up all kinds of food well and that it's compact.
The negative feedback pertains to there not being a rubber seal for the lid so steam escapes. If this is a concern for you, look for a unit that specifically has a rubber sealing lid or if you want it for rice, you're better off getting a rice steamer instead of a slow cooker.

One tidbit of interesting customer feedback was from someone who uses this to make jewelry in it and uses it for many hours every day. She admits she abuses it daily for this purpose and that it keeps on working well. That's a great testament to the quality and durability of this machine.

I've not tried every slow cooker appliance so it's not based on testing 75 models. While that would be ideal, my aim isn't to declare the best slow cooker available based on testing. Instead, I want to help cut your research time by putting together a sound list of compact slow cookers together to save you time.
Our criteria are small and have good customer feedback with an average high rating. Sure, even the highest rated models have some terrible reviews. It happens that people get a lemon. However, when one or two or even a handful of bad reviews are tempered by hundreds of good reviews, it's a sign that it's a quality product.
